History

Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats cross Black Sabbath's doom riffs with the sweet, eerie vocal harmonies of late-sixties psychedelic pop, then wrap everything in a murky, deliberately lo-fi production that sounds like a tape found in an old horror-film prop box. The project began in Cambridge, England, around the end of the 2000s, led by singer and guitarist Kevin Starrs, whose high, thin, slightly nasal voice is doubled and layered until it floats eerily above the fuzz. Early on the band kept a deliberate air of mystery, and Blood Lust, first released in 2011, built a following almost entirely by word of mouth before being picked up by Rise Above Records. Mind Control in 2013 and The Night Creeper in 2015 refined the formula with cleaner playing and sharper songwriting while keeping the grimy atmosphere. The lyrics dwell on cults, killers, drugs and paranoia, drawing on exploitation cinema, Italian giallo thrillers and the dark side of the hippie era. Listeners recognise them by catchy, singalong melodies sitting on top of heavy, menacing riffs.
