History

Tye Tribbett plays gospel like a rock and funk bandleader, with distorted guitar, slap bass, horn stabs and a stage show that runs at full sprint. He comes from the Camden, New Jersey area and first made his name fronting Tye Tribbett & G.A., a young choir whose shouted, syncopated arrangements were closer to a marching band than a Sunday service. Going solo, he kept the volume. Fresh (2010) carried that restless energy into a leaner lineup, and Greater Than (2013) produced "If He Did It Before... Same God", a live-recorded anthem whose call-and-response chant spread quickly through churches. The Bloody Win (2017) pushed further into loud, genre-mixing production. What marks a Tribbett record is tempo and interruption: arrangements stop dead, a single voice shouts the next line, and the whole band crashes back in. Under the noise the writing is simple and repetitive on purpose, so a crowd can learn it on the first pass. He is one of the main reasons urban gospel in the 2000s and 2010s sounded so physical.
