History
Twisted Sister is an American heavy metal band formed in 1972 in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, later based on Long Island, New York. After a decade of lineup changes and a punishing club circuit (one stretch saw them play nearly 600 nights in under two years), the band settled in 1982 into its classic lineup: Jay Jay French and Eddie "Fingers" Ojeda on guitars, Dee Snider on lead vocals, Mark "The Animal" Mendoza on bass, and A.J. Pero on drums. Known for androgynous makeup, teased hair, and glam-tinged costumes, they were grouped into the 1980s hair metal scene. Their first two albums, Under the Blade (1982) and You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll (1983), built underground popularity, but mainstream breakthrough came with Stay Hungry (1984) and its anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It" — the band's only Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Twisted Sister disbanded in 1988, reunited in 2003, released Still Hungry (2004) and A Twisted Christmas (2006), and toured until Pero's death in 2015 prompted a farewell run in 2016. VH1 ranked them 73rd on its 2015 list of the 100 greatest hard rock artists.
