History

Troll Gnet El call their music beer folk, and the label fits: rowdy folk metal driven by fiddle and Irish whistle, stomping rhythms and drinking songs dressed in the imagery of trolls, kings and Scandinavian myth. The band formed in Saint Petersburg in 1999 and built its name on the stage as much as on record, playing a heavy touring schedule and festivals across Russia and abroad. Their whole catalogue revolves around one running joke taken seriously, the cult of hops, which gives the album titles their shape: Prazdnik Pohmelyainen in 2005, Konung Hmel in 2007, Orden Presvetlogo Hmelya in 2009, Bratya vo Hmelyu in 2011 and Khmelnoye Serdtse in 2013, followed by Karjalali and Labirint Trolley. Musically they sit between folk rock and folk metal, with distorted guitars under jig-like melodies and gang vocals built for a crowd. The humour never gets in the way of the playing. A listener recognises them by the violin and whistle leading the charge and a tavern-hall energy that turns every chorus into a toast.
