History

Tri Yann are a folk band from Nantes whose theatrical mix of Breton tradition, medieval song and rock kept them on stage for some five decades. The name is Breton for the three Johns of Nantes, a nod to the three founders who all shared the first name Jean, and the debut album Tri Yann an Naoned in 1972 carried the same name. They arrived in the thick of the Breton folk revival of the 1970s, alongside Alan Stivell, and built their repertoire from old ballads, dance tunes and sea songs, reworked for voices, acoustic and electric guitars, fiddle, bombarde, bagpipes and early instruments. La Découverte ou l'Ignorance in 1976 and Urba in 1978 showed a band willing to build whole albums around a theme. Songs such as Le loup, le renard et la belette became standards of French folk. On stage the group leans into costume, humour and storytelling, which made its concerts events as much as recitals. Their signature is strong group vocals, traditional melodies driven by a rock rhythm section, and a sense of theatre in every arrangement.
