History

Tracy Chapman sings in a low contralto over fingerpicked acoustic guitar, and the arrangements around her stay deliberately thin so that the words carry. Her 1988 debut arrived when radio was dominated by synthesisers and drum machines, and it sold on the strength of plain narrative: a woman planning an escape by car, a street preacher, poverty described without decoration. A televised performance at a stadium concert honouring Nelson Mandela put Fast Car in front of a worldwide audience almost by accident, and the album went from a modest folk release to a phenomenon. Give Me One Reason, a twelve-bar blues from the mid-1990s, showed she could hold a groove as easily as a ballad. She has largely stayed out of public life and releases records at her own pace. Fast Car returned to the charts decades later through a country cover, and the original still sounds like one person, one guitar and a story told straight through.
