History

Toto Cutugno worked in the Italian melodic tradition, writing songs built around a big sustained chorus and singing them in a warm, slightly husky baritone that stays conversational in the verses. He came up as a songwriter first, supplying material to other performers in Italy and France before his own records took hold, and that craft shows in how tightly his melodies are put together. L'Italiano, a portrait of ordinary Italian life sung half in affection and half in complaint, became the song foreign audiences know him by, particularly in Russia and the former Soviet republics, where it has been covered and sung around tables for decades. He won Sanremo and then took Eurovision in 1990 with Insieme: 1992, a hymn to a Europe about to open its borders. The arrangements lean on strings, acoustic guitar and a steady mid-tempo pulse. A listener recognises the long vowels held out over a rising chorus.
