History
Tory Lanez, born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson on July 27, 1992, in Brampton, Ontario, is a Canadian singer, rapper, and producer known for blending R&B, hip-hop, dancehall, and pop. Sean Kingston discovered him in 2010 after a freestyle video circulated online, and Lanez built his name through a run of independent mixtapes, breaking through with Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story (2013). In 2015 he signed to producer Benny Blanco's Mad Love Records via Interscope. His debut album, I Told You (2016), produced the Billboard Hot 100 hits "Say It" and "Luv." Memories Don't Die and Love Me Now? followed in 2018 - the latter spawning the double-platinum single "Talk to Me" with Rich the Kid - then Chixtape 5 (2019) and Daystar (2020). During the 2020 pandemic lockdown, his Instagram Live show "Quarantine Radio" drew surprise guests like Drake and Justin Bieber and set a platform viewership record. In 2023 he was convicted and sentenced to ten years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, halting his output until the 2025 album Peterson.
