History
Tony Bennett (born Anthony Dominick Benedetto, August 3, 1926 – July 21, 2023) was an American jazz and traditional pop singer from New York City. After serving as a U.S. Army infantryman in Europe during World War II, he signed to Columbia Records and scored his first number-one hit, "Because of You," in 1951, followed by "Rags to Riches" in 1953. His jazz phrasing deepened through the late 1950s, and in 1962 he recorded his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." His career faded during the rock era but rebounded in the late 1980s and 1990s, winning over a new MTV-era audience while keeping his style unchanged. Late in life he found fresh acclaim collaborating with Lady Gaga on Cheek to Cheek (2014) and Love for Sale (2021); the latter made him, at 95, the oldest person ever to release an album of new material, a Guinness World Record, and gave him the longest top-10 Billboard 200 run of any living artist. He won 20 Grammy Awards plus a Lifetime Achievement Award, sold over 50 million records, and kept performing after revealing a 2016 Alzheimer's diagnosis, retiring only after his final 2021 Radio City Music Hall shows with Gaga.
