2000s drummer-led afrobeat groove from the 2000s: ghosted snare chatter, loose hi-hat conversation, dub-delayed rimshot, hypnotic and spacious in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Tony Allen built the rhythm afrobeat is made of. As the drummer in Fela Kuti's bands he worked out a way of playing in which the four limbs operate almost independently: hi-hat keeping a loose, breathing pulse, snare filled with ghost notes that never announce themselves, bass drum placed off the obvious count. The result swings without ever settling into a straight backbeat, and it is why the long horn vamps of afrobeat can run fifteen minutes without stalling. He came out of Lagos highlife and a lot of jazz listening, and the jazz shows in how little he repeats himself. After leaving Fela's organisation he based himself in Paris and spent decades collaborating outside afrobeat entirely, with electronic producers, rock musicians and jazz players, which carried his feel far past the genre it was invented for. Brian Eno called him the greatest drummer who ever lived. Asiko and Kilode are the clearest places to hear the groove on its own terms.
