History

Tom Browne is a trumpeter from Queens, New York, who carried the bright, clean attack of straight-ahead jazz trumpet into the dance-oriented jazz-funk of the early 1980s. He recorded for GRP, the label run by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen that specialised in polished, radio-friendly jazz, and his records sit on the funkier edge of that catalogue. Love Approach, from 1980, contains Funkin' for Jamaica (N.Y.), his best-known track: a tribute to his neighbourhood of Jamaica, Queens, built on a slapping bass line, handclaps, a chanted vocal hook and punchy trumpet riffs, and a major rhythm and blues hit that still gets played in clubs and sampled. Magic and Yours Truly, both from 1981, kept the same balance of boogie rhythm sections, vocal features and trumpet solos that stay melodic and hooky rather than virtuosic. He later stepped back from recording for long stretches. What marks him out is the trumpet used as a lead voice in a dance record, bright and tuneful, sitting on a tight, bass-driven New York groove.
