History

Tinariwen play what the outside world calls desert blues and what their own language calls assouf, a music of longing. The group formed among Tuareg communities displaced across the Sahara, and the guitars were picked up in exile, in camps far from home, which is audible in everything they do: circular single note lines that never quite resolve, a loping rhythm carried by handclaps and percussion, and call and response vocals in Tamasheq where a lead line is answered by the whole room. The pentatonic phrasing sits close enough to Mississippi blues that Western listeners hear a family resemblance, though the lineage runs the other way and through the Sahel. Their songs are political by default, concerned with exile, land and the survival of a nomadic culture, and the membership stays fluid, closer to a collective than a fixed lineup. Tassili won a Grammy in 2012 and brought them to festival stages worldwide. The signature is the trance.
