History

Timbaland rebuilt what a rhythm track could be. Working out of Virginia, he replaced the straight boom bap of the era with stuttering, off grid patterns, silence used as a percussion element, beatboxed grunts and vocal tics left in the mix, and sounds borrowed from Indian, Middle Eastern and East Asian records long before that was common practice. His productions for a generation of singers and rappers through the late 1990s and 2000s gave each of them a sharper, stranger frame than their peers had, and the beats were identifiable within two bars, often with his own muttered ad libs sitting under the hook. As a solo artist he stepped forward with Shock Value, which reached number one in the United States: The Way I Are pared the sound down to a bassline and a handclap, Apologize took a rock ballad and set it on his drums. What a listener recognises is the space and the swing that refuses to sit square.
