History

Étienne de Crécy is a French DJ and producer, born 25 February 1969 in Lyon and raised in Versailles, where he attended school alongside future Air members and Alex Gopher, with whom he later co-founded the Solid label. Working as a sound engineer in Paris, he partnered with Philippe Zdar (of Cassius) as Motorbass for the 1996 album Pansoul, a key precursor to French house. His solo debut, Super Discount (1997), built on that sound and featured contributions from Air and Alex Gopher. The follow-up Tempovision (2000) took a bluesier turn; its single "Am I Wrong," built around a Millie Jackson vocal sample, reached No. 44 on the UK Singles Chart. Super Discount 2 (2004) revived the concept using all-analog gear like the Roland TB-303, with tracks unusually named after early peer-to-peer file-sharing clients such as Limewire. He has kept releasing music on his own Pixadelic label, most recently Warm Up (2025), a collaborative album featuring Damon Albarn, Kero Kero Bonito and others. His brother Nicolas de Crécy is a noted comic-book artist.
