History

Thy Art Is Murder brought Australian deathcore to the international stage with a sound that leans heavily on death metal: fast blast beats, dense riffing and breakdowns used as punctuation rather than as the whole point. The band formed in Sydney in the mid-2000s. Hate, released in 2012, made them one of the rare extreme metal acts to reach the Australian album charts and turned them into a steady touring name abroad. Holy War in 2015 sharpened the lyrics into attacks on religion, war and power, and Dear Desolation in 2017 kept that bleak tone with tighter songwriting. For most of their run the vocals came from CJ McMahon, whose low, rasping growl defined the records; he left the band in 2023 and Tyler Miller took his place. Across these albums the group kept a clear identity instead of chasing trends in the genre. A listener recognises them by precise, heavy drumming, riffs that sit closer to death metal than to hardcore, and an openly confrontational lyrical stance aimed at institutions and belief.
