History
Named after the bumbling detectives in Tintin, the band started in Chesterfield in 1977 as a shifting collective of up to seven people and did not find its shape until 1982, when it shrank to three: Tom Bailey singing and writing, Alannah Currie on percussion and keyboards, Joe Leeway on congas and synths. Quick Step and Side Kick (1983) carried "Love on Your Side". Into the Gap (1984) went to number one in Britain and sold in the millions. "Hold Me Now" is the one everybody keeps, a mid-tempo ballad whose hook is played on a soft tuned-percussion sound with the three voices stacked in the chorus. "Doctor! Doctor!" and "You Take Me Up" came off the same record. They played Live Aid in Philadelphia in 1985 and Madonna joined them on stage for "Revolution". Nile Rodgers worked on Here's to Future Days (1985). Leeway left in 1986, and Bailey and Currie continued as a duo.
