History

Thomas Köner makes ambient music that sounds like ice: long, low drones, barely moving textures and a sense of vast, frozen distance. A German artist from Bochum working across sound, video and installation, he became one of the reference points of what critics in the 1990s called isolationism. His early albums Nunatak Gongamur, Teimo and Permafrost were built largely from gong recordings, slowed, filtered and layered until the metal's shimmer turned into deep, subterranean hum. The titles point straight at the imagery: nunataks are rocky peaks that break through glaciers, and permafrost is ground that never thaws. The music has no rhythm and almost no melody, only slow swells in the bass and faint high overtones, like wind across an empty plain. Köner has also worked in a completely different register as one half of the dub techno duo Porter Ricks, and later turned to audiovisual works and live scores for silent films. A listener recognises his solo work by its extreme stillness, sub-bass weight and polar atmosphere.
