History
Thievery Corporation is a Washington duo that treats the mixing desk as an instrument and the record collection as a passport. Their music runs dub bass and tape echo underneath bossa nova guitar, sitar, Jamaican toasting and French, Portuguese, Hindi and Farsi vocals from a rotating cast of guest singers, all held at a downtempo pulse that never hurries. The Mirror Conspiracy set the template in 2000 and became shorthand for a whole strain of lounge electronica that filled bars and hotel lobbies for the rest of the decade, though the group's own politics were sharper than that setting suggests, with later albums leaning openly on protest lyrics. Lebanese Blonde is the piece most people arrive by, its sitar line and smoky vocal carried well beyond electronic circles by a film soundtrack. Live, the duo expand into a large band with horns and several vocalists, which turns the studio miniatures into something closer to a dub sound system. The signature is the bass: deep, delayed and patient.
