History

Therapy? make short, abrasive songs that sit where punk, noise rock and metal meet, with hooks sharp enough to get on the radio and lyrics full of black humour, guilt and anxiety. The trio formed in Northern Ireland at the end of the eighties around singer and guitarist Andy Cairns, with bassist Michael McKeegan and drummer Fyfe Ewing, and built a following through self-released singles before moving to a major label. Nurse in 1992 was their first major-label album, knotty and aggressive, with a strong noise-rock streak. Troublegum in 1994 was the breakthrough: tight, fast, catchy songs such as "Screamager" and "Nowhere" took them into the UK charts, and the album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Infernal Love in 1995 went the other way, slower and bleaker, with strings and a cover of Hüsker Dü's "Diane". The band has carried on recording through many decades with Cairns and McKeegan at its core. The trademarks are the buzzsaw guitar, the pop-sized choruses and that Northern Irish gallows wit.
