History
The Trammps came out of Philadelphia with a rougher voice than most disco acts of the 1970s. Where the style tended toward smooth lead singing over orchestration, their records were fronted by a hoarse, shouted delivery with more in common with gospel and hard soul, set against a full band of horns, strings and a drummer who kept the four-beat pulse relentless. The group had roots in earlier vocal-group work, from before the dance floor reshaped Philadelphia's studios, and that older training shows in the tight background harmonies behind the shouting. Disco Inferno was already a club record before the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack carried it to a mass audience and to a Grammy, and its long form, building and building without a chorus that settles, still shows how a dance track was constructed when it had to hold a room rather than fill a radio slot. The recognisable element is that grainy lead against a slick, heavily arranged band, a tension the genre rarely allowed.
