History

The Stylistics sang Philadelphia soul at its smoothest, built around a high, unwavering falsetto lead that floated over arrangements thick with strings, French horn and softly brushed rhythm. Where other vocal groups of the early 1970s traded lines between several strong voices, this one kept the lead in a single place and used the other members as a cushion of close harmony beneath it. The production, shaped in Philadelphia by Thom Bell, treated each song as light orchestral pop: melodies that resolve gently, tempos slow enough to walk to, almost no grit anywhere in the mix. The result was a long run of hits through the first half of the decade, and in Britain the group stayed popular even after American taste moved toward disco. Their ballads became standards at weddings and on quiet-storm radio, and later soul singers studied them for phrasing rather than power. A listener recognises that falsetto, unforced and held very steady, and strings that swell without ever pushing the voice aside.
