History

The Rasmus are a Helsinki band who found an international audience by pairing dark, minor-key pop-rock with choruses built for arenas. They had been working for years in Finland, closer to funk-inflected rock, before the sound narrowed into what most listeners know: mid-tempo, string arrangements over distorted guitar, and Lauri Ylonen singing in a thin, keening tenor that carries the melody more than it pushes volume. In the Shadows is the song that moved them across Europe, a stalking riff, a hook that repeats until it sticks, and a lyric about waiting rather than acting. First Day of My Life, from the same period, strips the arrangement back to piano and shows how much of the appeal is melodic rather than heavy. No Fear keeps the gothic tint but leans harder on the guitars. They sit in the same early-2000s European current as the melancholic Scandinavian rock bands who crossed over at the time, and what a listener recognises is the combination of gloom in the verse and open, bright lift in the chorus.
