History

The Outside Agency is a Dutch duo from Goes, Noël Wessels and Frank Nitzinsky, who spent decades pulling hardcore techno away from its party formulas and toward something darker and more inventive. They started out in the early 1990s under a different name before settling on The Outside Agency, and in 2003 they founded Genosha Recordings, a label that became central to the industrial hardcore sound. Their records mix heavy distorted kicks with the breakbeats and bass pressure of drum and bass, and they are counted among the pioneers of crossbreed, the hybrid of the two styles. Scenocide 101 in 2005 and Scenocide 202 in 2010 laid out that approach at album length, and The Dogs Are Listening in 2012 continued it. Both members also work under separate aliases, which feeds a wide range of tempos and moods into the duo. Their tracks are easy to pick out: a cold, cinematic atmosphere, mechanically precise drums and constant shifts between four-to-the-floor pounding and broken rhythms.
