History

The Orb turned ambient into something you could dance next to rather than only fall asleep to. Alex Paterson built the project in the London acid house years, working the chill-out rooms where clubbers came down after the main floor, and the records kept that function: long, slow-moving pieces stitched together from dub bass, found speech, birdsong, radio chatter and the slow bloom of a synth pad. Little Fluffy Clouds is the template, a spoken sample looped over a shuffling breakbeat and a guitar figure borrowed from minimalism. Blue Room stretched to nearly forty minutes and still reached the UK singles chart, which says most of what needs saying about how strange that moment was. U.F.Orb took the approach to the top of the UK album chart. Toxygene, later, grew out of a remix commission and came back harder and more acidic than the source. What a listener recognises is the sense of drift: no hurry, no chorus, layers arriving and leaving while the bass holds the room.
