History
The Oppressed played hard, straightforward Oi! with a clear political purpose: to take skinhead culture back from the far right. The band came from Cardiff in Wales and was led by Roddy Moreno, whose outspoken anti-fascism shaped everything they did. Their sound is classic early-1980s Oi!, with raw guitars, simple driving rhythms and gang-shouted choruses, but the message set them apart. Moreno championed the skinhead movement's roots in Jamaican music and multiracial working-class youth, and he is credited with bringing the Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice idea from the United States to Britain. Their album Oi! Oi! Music! from 1984 is the record most associated with them, followed by releases like Fatal Blow and Dead & Buried later in the decade. The band remained a reference point long after the first Oi! wave faded, with later reunions and a steady presence on the European scene. Listeners recognise The Oppressed by their no-frills punk attack and by lyrics that make their politics impossible to miss.
