History
The Mission played big, anthemic gothic rock: ringing twelve-string guitars, pounding drums and Wayne Hussey's dramatic, crooning voice, with more than a trace of classic rock and psychedelia underneath. Hussey and bassist Craig Adams formed the band in 1986 after leaving The Sisters of Mercy, and for a short time used the name The Sisterhood before settling on The Mission. Their debut, God's Own Medicine (1986), set out the style, and Children (1988), produced by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, pushed it towards heavier, grander arrangements and included Tower of Strength. Carved in Sand (1990) was more polished and melodic, with songs such as Butterfly on a Wheel and Deliverance. Where many goth bands were cold and minimal, The Mission were warm, emotional and unashamedly epic, which brought them a devoted following and regular places in the British charts. The sound is easy to spot: shimmering layered guitars, sweeping choruses and Hussey's theatrical delivery.
