History
The Mamas & the Papas were built around four-part harmony, two male and two female voices arranged so tightly that the blend, rather than any single singer, is the instrument. John and Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty came together in the mid-1960s and became the sound of Los Angeles folk rock at the moment it turned commercial, with lush studio production and session musicians behind the vocals. California Dreamin' is the song everyone knows, its minor-key verses and the alto flute solo in the middle giving it a chill that the title does not promise. Monday, Monday is the brighter counterpart, and Dedicated to the One I Love reworks an older rhythm and blues song into something slower and more sumptuous. John Phillips also helped organise the Monterey Pop Festival, which put the group at the centre of the 1967 California scene. The band lasted only a few years, held together and pulled apart by the relationships inside it.
