History
The KLF turned British acid house into pop spectacle and, almost in passing, made one of the founding records of ambient house. The duo of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty worked under a string of aliases and treated the music business itself as material for pranks, manifestos and art actions. Chill Out (1990) is a continuous, beatless journey stitched together from pedal steel guitar, sheep bleats, passing trains, radio fragments and samples of Elvis Presley and Fleetwood Mac, imagined as a night drive along the American Gulf Coast. It became a model for the chill-out rooms of the rave era. The White Room (1991) went the other way, collecting their stadium house singles such as 3 a.m. Eternal and Last Train to Trancentral, big chanted hits across Europe. At the height of their success they announced their retirement and deleted their catalogue, and later, as the K Foundation, burned a million pounds. A listener recognises them by huge sampled hooks, rave energy and playful, mythic excess.
