History
The Klezmatics play klezmer as living music rather than museum piece: Eastern European Jewish dance tunes and Yiddish song pushed into contact with jazz, punk energy, Balkan brass, Middle Eastern modes and downtown New York experimentalism. The band formed in New York's East Village in the mid 1980s, part of a wider klezmer revival, with trumpeter Frank London and singer Lorin Sklamberg among its core members. Albums such as Rhythm + Jews and Jews with Horns show the approach: traditional freylekhs and doinas played with ecstatic, sometimes raucous energy, alongside new songs that carry political and queer themes into the Yiddish tradition. Wonder Wheel, released in 2006, set previously unrecorded lyrics by Woody Guthrie to new music and won a Grammy for best contemporary world music album. The group has also worked with artists including Itzhak Perlman and Chava Alberstein. Listeners recognise the Klezmatics by the crying clarinet and trumpet lines, the violin, the Yiddish vocals and a rhythm section that swings as easily as it stomps.
