History
The HU play what they call hunnu rock: slow, crushing grooves built on Mongolian traditional instruments, with the morin khuur horsehead fiddle and the tovshuur lute running through distortion, a jaw harp buzzing underneath and throat singing that turns every chorus into a war chant. The band formed in Ulaanbaatar in the mid-2010s together with producer Dashka, and took its name from the Hunnu, the steppe people the members see as ancestors. They broke through in 2018 when the videos for Yuve Yuve Yu and Wolf Totem, filmed across the Mongolian landscape in traditional dress, spread far beyond Mongolia and drew millions of views. The debut album The Gereg followed in 2019 and led to extensive touring in North America and Europe, and Rumble of Thunder arrived in 2022. Lyrics are sung in Mongolian and often draw on old poetry, history and calls to pride and unity. The HU are the act that took Mongolian folk metal into the global mainstream. A listener recognises them by the heavy mid-tempo stomp, by the growling throat-sung vocals doubled by fiddle, and by a sound meant for huge open spaces.
