History

The Head and the Heart built their sound on shared vocals, piano, acoustic guitar and violin, the kind of folk rock where a whole room sings the chorus back. The band came together in Seattle around Josiah Johnson and Jonathan Russell, who traded lead vocals, with Charity Rose Thielen adding violin and a third voice that became central to the harmonies. Their self-titled debut was first sold by the band themselves before Sub Pop picked it up and gave it a wider release, and songs like "Lost in My Mind" and "Rivers and Roads" carried them from local open mics to festival stages. They arrived in the same wave as other harmony-driven indie folk acts, but leaned more on piano and on songs about leaving home and staying in touch. Later records, including Let's Be Still and Living Mirage, polished the production and moved toward a fuller rock band sound without dropping the group vocals. A listener recognises them by stacked male and female harmonies, a steady stomp and choruses written to be sung by everyone at once.
