History
The Future Sound of London built dense, cinematic electronic music out of samples, breakbeats and sound design, moving from rave-era dance tracks to sprawling ambient collages that feel like travelling through an imaginary city. The duo of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans came together in Manchester and first broke through with Papua New Guinea (1991), a dreamy ambient house single built around a haunting vocal sample and a deep, rolling bassline, which became one of the defining records of the early 1990s. Their debut album Accelerator (1992) still leaned toward the club, but Lifeforms (1994) dissolved the beat into long, flowing suites of found sound, textures and fragments of melody, with guest appearances including Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins. They also broadcast live sets to radio over ISDN lines without leaving the studio. Across aliases and side projects they kept returning to the same idea: electronic music as a landscape rather than a song. A listener recognises them by layered samples, organic ambience and a sense of vast, shifting space.
