History

The Diplomats, better known as Dipset, turned Harlem swagger into a whole aesthetic: loud fashion, relentless mixtapes and beats built on sped-up soul samples. The group was started in 1997 by childhood friends Cam'ron and Jim Jones, with Freekey Zekey in the original lineup and Juelz Santana joining a couple of years later. Signed through Roc-A-Fella, they released the double album Diplomatic Immunity in 2003, and its single "Dipset Anthem", produced by the Heatmakerz, is a textbook example of the chipmunk soul sound: a soul record pitched up until the vocal squeaks, looped over hard drums while the rappers talk as if they already own the city. Diplomatic Immunity 2 followed in 2004 on Koch. The members pursued solo careers, fell out and reunited more than once, and a later reunion produced the album Diplomatic Ties in 2018. Their influence runs through the street mixtape era of New York rap. Listeners know them by the high, looping soul hooks, Cam'ron's playful, slippery rhymes and ad-libs shouted over the top.
