History

The Caretaker is the long-running project of the English musician Leyland Kirby, built almost entirely from old 78 rpm ballroom records. The name and the starting idea come from the haunted ballroom scene in The Shining. Kirby takes dance-band songs from the 1920s and 1930s, slows and loops them, and buries them under crackle, hiss and reverb until they sound like a memory that is slipping away. An Empty Bliss Beyond This World was shaped by research on how people with Alzheimer's disease can still recall songs from their youth, and it presents short, warm loops that stutter and repeat. Everywhere at the End of Time pushed the idea to its limit: a series released in six stages over several years that follows the progression of dementia, moving from gently degraded melodies into long passages of noise and confusion before a final return of something almost clear. The project became a reference point for hauntology and for tape loop ambient, and the series later found a large new audience online, far beyond the experimental scene where it began.
