History
The Business played Oi! with a strong pop sense: catchy, mid-paced street punk songs with gang choruses, clean hooks and a sense of humour that kept them apart from the grimmer end of the scene. They formed in Lewisham in south London at the end of the 1970s, with Micky Fitz as their singer and frontman for decades, and became one of the defining bands of the early 1980s Oi! movement. Their debut album Suburban Rebels, released in 1983, collected songs about football, drinking, boredom and life on the estates, including Harry May, one of the scene's best-known anthems. Saturday's Heroes followed in 1985, with the football-themed title track becoming another staple. The band took an openly anti-racist stance at a time when the scene was often tarred with far-right associations. After a quiet spell they returned in the 1990s with records such as Keep the Faith in 1994 and found a new audience among younger street punk fans in Europe and America. Listeners recognise The Business by their bouncy tempos, big sing-along refrains and Fitz's rough, good-humoured vocal delivery.
