History

The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir sings worship on a grand, cinematic scale: hundreds of ordinary church members in unison and wide harmony, orchestral arrangements that swell behind them, and soloists who carry ballads toward huge final choruses. The choir belongs to the Brooklyn Tabernacle, a small, struggling church when Jim Cymbala became its pastor in 1971. His wife, Carol Cymbala, took charge of the music, writing and arranging songs and directing the choir, and as the congregation grew into one of the largest in New York the choir grew with it. Recorded live in the church, albums such as Live...We Come Rejoicing, Praise Him - Live! and High and Lifted Up made its sound familiar in churches across denominations, sitting between Black gospel and evangelical praise and worship. The choir has won several Grammy Awards and sang at Barack Obama's second inauguration in 2013. What sets it apart is the sheer mass of voices and the patient way each arrangement climbs from a quiet verse to a roaring climax.
