History

The Berzerker, from Melbourne, fused death metal and grindcore with the pounding kick drums of gabber, the hardcore techno style from the Netherlands, and did it at speeds few bands tried to match. The project was led by Luke Kenny, and in its early years the members performed in grotesque masks, which kept attention on the music and its extremity rather than on personalities. The self-titled debut in 2000, released on the British label Earache, made the formula clear: drum machine blasts pushed far past human tempo, distorted gabber kicks under brutal riffs, and short songs that hit like bursts of noise. Later albums such as Dissimulate and World of Lies introduced more live drumming and more conventional death metal structure while keeping the electronic aggression. The Berzerker were an odd fit for both the metal and electronic worlds, which is part of why they are remembered. Listeners recognise them by the mechanical, relentless pulse of the kicks, the sheer velocity and the feeling of a rave and a grind show colliding.
