History

The project came out of Belgium, put together by Jo Bogaert, who also recorded as Thomas De Quincey. "Pump Up the Jam" (1989) carried hip-house from club floors into international charts: house tempo underneath, rapped vocal on top, a bassline built from one stubborn synth tone. The voice belongs to Ya Kid K, born Manuela Kamosi in Congo and raised in Belgium. A model named Felly appeared on the sleeve and in the video, which left plenty of listeners unsure whose voice they were actually hearing, and the confusion had to be corrected afterwards. "Get Up! (Before the Night Is Over)" followed in 1990, and "Move This" became a hit in the United States some time after it was recorded. Pump Up the Jam: The Album gathered the material. Technotronic took Chicago hip-house arrangements and cut them down to pop single length.
