History

Team Dresch played fast, melodic punk with dual guitars and big, anthemic choruses, and they were among the defining bands of queercore, the queer punk movement that ran alongside riot grrrl in the 1990s. The group formed in the Pacific Northwest, centred on Portland and Olympia, around guitarist Donna Dresch, who also ran the zine and label Chainsaw, with Jody Bleyle, Kaia Wilson and Marcéo Martinez among the members. Their records came out on Chainsaw and on Candy Ass Records, run by Bleyle, keeping the whole operation inside the DIY network. Personal Best in 1995 is the album they are best remembered for, full of songs about being young, gay and angry that also carried real warmth and humour. Captain My Captain followed in 1996. Team Dresch broke up in the late 1990s and later reunited for occasional shows. For many listeners they were one of the first bands to put lesbian experience at the centre of punk without apology. Their sound is built on driving, interlocking guitars, shared vocals and choruses made to be shouted back.
