History

Bulanova started in Leningrad at the end of the 1980s with the group Letniy sad, and Ne plach put her on television in 1991. The Petersburg pop school of that moment favoured restraint: minor key, unhurried tempo, a voice singing about loss without ever raising itself, and she became its clearest example. The nickname that stuck in the early 1990s, the singer with the sad eyes, has stayed with her since. Yasnyy moy svet followed in 1993, Moy nenaglyadnyy after it. The arrangements lean on piano and strings instead of the drum machines that dominated Moscow dance pop at exactly the same time, so the recordings have aged along a different line. She worked without long breaks for three decades. In the 2020s a second wave of attention reached her through the internet, from listeners who found the songs decades after they were new.
