History

t.A.T.u. is a Russian pop duo formed in Moscow in 1999 by producer Ivan Shapovalov and his partner Aleksandr Voytinskiy, who cast teenage singers Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, both former members of the children's group Neposedy. The act built its image around a staged schoolgirl-romance concept and a moody electronic-pop sound, becoming one of the most commercially successful acts to emerge from Russia. Their 2001 debut, 200 Po Vstrechnoy, was a hit across Eastern Europe; its English-language version, 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane (2002), went platinum in Europe, gold in the US and UK, and made t.A.T.u. the first act by a foreign group to top the album chart in Japan. The single "All the Things She Said" spent four consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart. In 2003 the duo represented Russia at Eurovision, finishing third. After parting ways with Shapovalov, they released Dangerous and Moving (2005), scoring another international hit with "All About Us," followed by two further albums before splitting in 2011. Katina and Volkova reunited as t.A.T.u. in 2025.
