History
Tatsuro Yamashita is the centre of gravity of city pop, the Japanese strain of pop that borrowed American soul, AOR and studio funk and rebuilt them around Tokyo in the boom years. He came out of the group Sugar Babe before going solo, and the solo work is defined by obsessive studio craft: clean guitar figures, horn arrangements that punctuate rather than fill, and dense stacks of his own multi-tracked backing vocals, which are as recognisable as any lead line he sings. Ride on Time made that sound national. Sparkle opens with a guitar riff that later generations lifted wholesale when they went looking for this era. Christmas Eve, a slow ballad with a Pachelbel quotation at its centre, returns to the Japanese charts every December, which is close to unheard of for a single record. He has stayed deliberately outside the streaming economy for much of his catalogue, and the music circulated anyway.
