History

Tarkan took Turkish pop onto European radio without sanding off where it came from. His records sit on Anatolian rhythm and darbuka patterns, arranged with the synth brass and dance production of the late nineties, while his voice moves between a light upper register and a playful, almost conversational delivery. Simarik, written by Sezen Aksu, became the export: the kiss sound in its hook made the chorus legible to people who spoke no Turkish, and the song travelled across Europe and Latin America before being recorded in English as Kiss Kiss. What followed showed range rather than repeating the trick. Kuzu Kuzu leans on a heavier groove and a wounded lyric, Dudu on club production and a darker low end. At home he changed what a male pop singer was allowed to be, dancing hard, dressing loudly and singing about desire in plain language, and much of the Turkish pop that followed works in the space he opened.
