History
Tallah play a chaotic, genre-blurring strain of heavy music often labelled nu-core: nu metal bounce and turntable scratches collide with metalcore breakdowns, industrial noise, hardcore aggression and vocals that lurch from whispers and character voices to shrieks and guttural roars. The band formed in Pennsylvania in 2017. Among its members are vocalist Justin Bonitz, whose unpredictable delivery became the group's calling card, and Max Portnoy, son of Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who started out behind the kit. The band also has a turntablist who doubles on keyboards. Tallah signed with Earache Records in 2019 and released the concept album Matriphagy in 2020, followed by The Generation of Danger in 2022. Critics described the sound as nu metal with gnarly riffs, whipcrack drums, electronic textures and tortured vocals. In the wave of younger bands reviving nu metal, Tallah stood out for pushing it toward extremity rather than nostalgia, with sudden tempo shifts, theatrical vocal changes and dense, frantic arrangements.
