History

Take 6 sing gospel a cappella with the harmonic language of jazz: six voices stacked into dense, shifting chords, a bass voice that walks like an upright bass and vocal percussion filling in the drums. The sextet formed at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, a Seventh-day Adventist school, and initially performed under the name Alliance before becoming Take 6. Their self-titled debut in 1988 on Reprise surprised both gospel and jazz listeners with its precision, and it won Grammy Awards in both fields, the start of a long run of awards. So Much 2 Say and the holiday album He Is Christmas followed, keeping the faith-centred lyrics while drawing on doo-wop, soul, jazz vocal groups and barbershop. Members such as Mark Kibble, Claude McKnight, Cedric Dent and bass singer Alvin Chea helped define the sound, and the group has worked with jazz and pop artists far outside church circles. The hallmarks: crystal-clear intonation, lush close harmony, voice-built rhythm sections and gospel songs arranged with the complexity of a big band.
