History
SWV sang R&B with the swing and swagger of hip-hop, and that balance is what set them apart in the early nineties. The trio came out of New York with gospel-trained harmony at the centre while the tracks underneath borrowed swing-beat drums and looped samples from rap production. Coko's lead is the signature: a thin, nasal, slightly frayed tone that slides around the beat instead of sitting squarely on it, with the other two voices stacked tight behind her. Weak shows the softer end of the group, a slow burn carried almost entirely by phrasing, while Right Here in its remixed form put that harmony over a Michael Jackson sample and became the record most people know them by. I'm So Into You is the trio at their most rhythmic, closer to a rap record with singing laid on top. They arrived exactly at the moment when R&B stopped borrowing from hip-hop occasionally and started being built the same way.
