History

Susan Boyle is the rare case of a singer whose career began with a single television performance. She walked onto a talent show stage in her forties, from a small town in West Lothian, and sang I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables in a big unguarded mezzo that the room had visibly not expected. The clip travelled worldwide within days, and the debut album that followed became the fastest selling debut in the United Kingdom at the time. The voice itself is straightforward rather than ornamented: steady breath, very little vibrato, a wide chest tone held out on long notes, and no interest in decorating a melody that already works. The repertoire sits in traditional pop and light classical crossover, musical theatre numbers, hymns, standards and carefully chosen pop covers arranged with orchestra rather than a band. The Gift is representative of that later, quieter mode. What a listener recognises is the plainness of the delivery, a voice that simply sings the line as written and lets the song carry the emotion.
