History
Sublime formed in 1988 in Long Beach, California, as a three-piece led by singer-guitarist Bradley Nowell, with bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh. The band fused ska, punk, reggae, and hip-hop into a loose, sun-baked Southern California sound that helped define 1990s ska punk and reggae rock. Their first two records, 40oz. to Freedom (1992) and Robbin' the Hood (1994), built a cult following on college radio, but Sublime broke through only after tragedy: Nowell died of a heroin overdose in May 1996, two months before the release of their self-titled third album. That record, powered by the singles "Santeria" and "What I Got" (a Billboard Modern Rock No. 1), went on to be certified Diamond by the RIAA, making Sublime one of the rare bands to reach that sales tier posthumously. Nowell's dalmatian, Lou Dog, was a fixture at shows and became the band's unofficial mascot. In 2022 the group reformed with Bradley's son, Jakob Nowell, on vocals.
