History

Stryper took the sound and look of 1980s Los Angeles glam metal, soaring high vocals, twin guitar leads, big harmonies and spandex, and aimed all of it at an openly Christian message. The band formed in Southern California around brothers Michael Sweet on vocals and guitar and Robert Sweet on drums, with Oz Fox on guitar and Tim Gaines on bass. Their yellow-and-black striped stage outfits and gear became a trademark, and at concerts they threw Bibles into the crowd, which set them apart from every other band on the circuit. Soldiers Under Command established the formula, and To Hell with the Devil became their breakthrough, a major commercial success and a landmark for Christian metal, helped by the ballad Honestly and the anthem Calling on You. In God We Trust leaned further into polished pop metal. Stryper's sound rests on Michael Sweet's piercing tenor, tightly arranged harmony guitar parts, layered choruses and lyrics about faith delivered with the volume and flash of Sunset Strip hard rock.
