History

Three musicians from Massapequa on Long Island decided in 1979 that 1955 was a better year to work in. Brian Setzer played a Gretsch hollowbody drenched in slapback echo, Lee Rocker slapped an upright bass, and Slim Jim Phantom stood up behind a kit cut down to a snare, a bass drum and a cymbal. American labels were not interested, so in 1980 they moved to London, where a rockabilly revival was already running, and got their deal there. The debut album arrived in 1981 with Dave Edmunds producing, and Runaway Boys, Rock This Town and Stray Cat Strut charted in Britain first. The American compilation Built for Speed (1982) reached number two and turned a revival scene into a mainstream event. Built to Destroy followed in 1983. Every arrangement is built by subtraction: no keyboards, no distortion, no toms, with the echo on the guitar doing work a whole band would normally share.
